1 00:00:18 --> 00:00:20 Welcome to the spoken tutorial of Meet The GIMP. 2 00:00:21 --> 00:00:26 My Name is Rolf Steinort and i am recording this in Bremen, Northern Germany. 3 00:00:27 --> 00:00:33 In the beginning I will do something that I always forget to mention. 4 00:00:34 --> 00:00:44 I always forget to save the image before doing anything to it. 5 00:00:45 --> 00:01:04 So I go to File, Save as and save this as 6 00:01:05 --> 00:01:11 comic.xcf 7 00:01:12 --> 00:01:21 ‘xcf’ is the Gimp native file format and it keeps all the layers information in the file. 8 00:01:22 --> 00:01:29 Never save anything in Gimp as JPEG or tif or so, if you want to work further with it. 9 00:01:30 --> 00:01:44 You can export from there to every format you want to but for anything you want to do further work with, use XCF. 10 00:01:45 --> 00:01:58 So what to do? 1st thing I have to clear up this image a bit. 11 00:01:59 --> 00:02:14 There are two problems here, 1st the guy behind me. 12 00:02:15 --> 00:02:20 And 2nd is this clutter below here. 13 00:02:21 --> 00:02:30 This statue here is very well placed and I think, it is one of the corner points of this image. 14 00:02:31 --> 00:02:35 So let me 1st take away this stuff here. 15 00:02:36 --> 00:02:49 So I zoom into the image and select the Pen Tool. 16 00:02:50 --> 00:03:04 This is best done by Cloning Tool and I don’t have to work very precise here because all this little stuff will vanish in the final image. 17 00:03:05 --> 00:03:12 So i select the clone tool and change the size of the pen. 18 00:03:13 --> 00:03:23 Now I press Ctrl and Click to get a starting point and now I simply start to paint. 19 00:03:24 --> 00:03:41 But before starting that i change the Overlay mode to Normal mode, opacity to 100 and now let’s start painting. 20 00:03:42 --> 00:03:56 Image get's a little bit cloudy so i select another brush to paint. 21 00:03:57 --> 00:04:36 And now I go here to the border and paint. 22 00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 So the guy is gone. 23 00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 That leaves the clutter here. 24 00:04:44 --> 00:05:02 I want to keep the flower pot here but this stuff here has to go. 25 00:05:03 --> 00:05:23 I will take care of this border of the flower pot in a moment. 26 00:05:24 --> 00:05:42 If I would keep this image in this way, you would see the traces of cloning but they will vanish when I switch on the comic mode. 27 00:05:43 --> 00:06:05 So now lets do a bit about the flower pot here. 28 00:06:06 --> 00:06:25 I think i should clone from this point. 29 00:06:26 --> 00:06:33 It doesn't look very convincing in this zoom step but I think it will work. 30 00:06:34 --> 00:06:38 The comic image basically consist of three parts. 31 00:06:39 --> 00:06:49 1st there are the black patches or dark patches with no colours, which gives structure to the image. 32 00:06:50 --> 00:06:56 Then there are the lines which defines forms and items in the image. 33 00:06:57 --> 00:07:03 And then there is colour and we will start as in the tutorial with the patches. 34 00:07:04 --> 00:07:14 And for that 35 00:07:15 --> 00:07:24 I double this layer and call it ink. 36 00:07:25 --> 00:07:36 I select the Threshold tool and click into the image and pull the info window into the image. 37 00:07:37 --> 00:07:42 You see here the image is black and white. 38 00:07:43 --> 00:07:47 This tool divides the image into black and white. 39 00:07:48 --> 00:08:01 If the pixel is lighter than at the moment 82 then the combination of average value of red, green and blue is white. 40 00:08:02 --> 00:08:13 And if the level is below 82 it becomes black. 41 00:08:14 --> 00:08:18 Now we face the 1st problem here. 42 00:08:19 --> 00:08:25 When I draw this slider around the effect is very dark. 43 00:08:26 --> 00:08:39 This value here 129 would be nice for the left part of my face, the shoulder and for the statue. 44 00:08:40 --> 00:08:47 This would be nice for the eyes here 45 00:08:48 --> 00:08:52 And this for other eye. 46 00:08:53 --> 00:09:00 Now i have to use different ink layer for this image. 47 00:09:01 --> 00:09:13 So lets start from the lighter side, like this one here and go back into the image to 100%. 48 00:09:14 --> 00:09:28 I double this here and select the threshold tool and pull this slider down. 49 00:09:29 --> 00:09:45 But before that i have to make the top layer invisible. 50 00:09:46 --> 00:09:55 I think this value is good for this part of the face. 51 00:09:56 --> 00:10:07 I make a copy of this layer and make it visible and now I am working on this layer. 52 00:10:08 --> 00:10:12 I have to look for the middle terms here. 53 00:10:13 --> 00:10:22 This part of the face, I think this works quite good so i look around in the image. 54 00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 The statue is fine too. 55 00:10:26 --> 00:10:40 This image has a good definition here and near my hand the line is invisible and that is called optical illusion 56 00:10:41 --> 00:10:48 I think this is fine and it should be in the image. 57 00:10:49 --> 00:11:07 Now i select the Threshold tool make the line here visible and look at the bright parts to get little bit of definition So i slide this up. 58 00:11:08 --> 00:11:11 This looks better. 59 00:11:12 --> 00:11:16 Now I have 3 copies of my ink layer. 60 00:11:17 --> 00:11:27 1st is ink light . 61 00:11:28 --> 00:11:33 Top layer is ink dark. 62 00:11:34 --> 00:11:39 And lets name the middle layer simply ink. 63 00:11:40 --> 00:11:48 Now lets look at the 3 layers and decide which one is to use mostly. 64 00:11:49 --> 00:12:00 I think ink layer is a good base, because this is too light and this is too dark. 65 00:12:01 --> 00:12:11 So I put this layer in the bottom and I add a layer mask to the dark layer and the light layer. 66 00:12:12 --> 00:12:17 I add a layer mask in black which is fully transparent. 67 00:12:18 --> 00:12:25 So everything here gets invisible. 68 00:12:26 --> 00:12:44 When I draw white on this layer mask of the light layer, the image will be revealed in it. 69 00:12:45 --> 00:12:54 So I select the brush tool here with normal mode and opacity 100%. 70 00:12:55 --> 00:13:19 I think I shall use a hard brush and the pressure sensitivity should be the Size, so when I press the pen on the surface the dot will be larger. 71 00:13:20 --> 00:13:23 My foreground colour is white. 72 00:13:24 --> 00:13:27 So lets start 73 00:13:28 --> 00:13:33 I think the left part of the face should be brightened. 74 00:13:34 --> 00:13:38 I press 1 to zoom into the image. 75 00:13:39 --> 00:13:52 I think this brush is too small, so i scale this a bit up. 76 00:13:53 --> 00:13:59 That looks better. 77 00:14:00 --> 00:14:04 But perhaps it is too bright. 78 00:14:05 --> 00:14:46 This has to be either black or white. 79 00:14:47 --> 00:14:56 So i switch the colours with ‘X’ key and paint this over again here. 80 00:14:57 --> 00:15:13 But i think i can leave this out here and put the next layer above that. 81 00:15:14 --> 00:15:29 Now we are more concern about the areas and about the structure, so I should forget about the lines and just look at the structure here. 82 00:15:30 --> 00:15:33 Simply leave it as it is. 83 00:15:34 --> 00:15:43 I can add another layer easily and now i paint for the dark parts with the white colour. 84 00:15:44 --> 00:15:50 Lets see if I can reveal here a little bit. 85 00:15:51 --> 00:15:55 I think this is too much. 86 00:15:56 --> 00:16:07 I want to make the face a bit darker. 87 00:16:08 --> 00:16:18 And here also. 88 00:16:19 --> 00:16:30 I think that’s too dark. 89 00:16:31 --> 00:16:45 Here there is some work still to be done but I will leave it to this here and look at it after I am done with the next step with the lines and then I can adjust here. 90 00:16:46 --> 00:16:48 This has to be brightened up. 91 00:16:49 --> 00:16:52 So we'll look at the edit there. 92 00:16:53 --> 00:17:07 In this step i have to add some lines and this can be done by doubling the background layer and putting it on top and naming it lines. 93 00:17:08 --> 00:17:14 The lines are the edges between different colours. 94 00:17:15 --> 00:17:32 So i go to Filters, then we have edge-detect, and here I have difference of Gaussians edge detect. 95 00:17:33 --> 00:17:44 The relevant slider is the Radius and if you decrease the number the lines get finer. 96 00:17:45 --> 00:17:55 If you increase the number the lines get wider and you get more of the details in the image. 97 00:17:56 --> 00:18:09 I would prefer something around 10 but i can go to 30 and then decide where exactly i should stop. 98 00:18:10 --> 00:18:26 When i go to 30 i dont get the edges but areas and 12 would give this here. 99 00:18:27 --> 00:18:36 And I think I will settle at 10. 100 00:18:37 --> 00:18:49 I set the layer mode of this layer to Multiply and for the colour rising I will later need to reduce the white in the image. 101 00:18:50 --> 00:18:55 Now lets just checkout if we have got this right upto now. 102 00:18:56 --> 00:19:07 So I will switch the lines layer on and off and you see here there is some definition when the line layer is on. 103 00:19:08 --> 00:19:19 And now I de-select the dark ink layer and keep the light ink layer. 104 00:19:20 --> 00:19:29 The structure that I wanted to have in with my dark ink layer is visible in the lines layer. 105 00:19:30 --> 00:19:41 So I will leave the dark ink layer switched off. 106 00:19:42 --> 00:19:49 I dont think there is a need to combine these layers here. 107 00:19:50 --> 00:20:08 I will leave it as it is, so that i can change something and it will be in the final image. 108 00:20:09 --> 00:20:27 Next step as I said I have to reduce the white channel here, and it can be done with the levels tool and I reduce the level upto 240. 109 00:20:28 --> 00:20:39 When i switch off this layer you can see that I have a gray background and little bit of colour information in here. 110 00:20:40 --> 00:20:59 For getting the colour in the image I copy the background layer and name it Colour and put it on top and set the layer mode to Colour. 111 00:21:00 --> 00:21:06 But it doesnt look good so i should change the mode. 112 00:21:07 --> 00:21:11 The image has got little bit of colour in here. 113 00:21:12 --> 00:21:23 But I want more saturation so again i make the copy of background layer and name it Saturation. 114 00:21:24 --> 00:21:28 I set the layer mode to Saturation . 115 00:21:29 --> 00:21:37 I think this saturation mode already works and the effects are very good. 116 00:21:38 --> 00:21:46 There should have been more flatness in the colour and the hand is not looking comic. 117 00:21:47 --> 00:21:50 I will look where this comes from . 118 00:21:51 --> 00:21:57 So I can now start to play with this sliders. 119 00:21:58 --> 00:22:18 Going down with saturation, gets little bit flatter, and looks more like water colours, so this is a strange effect. 120 00:22:19 --> 00:22:25 Now I can start to play with the layers here. 121 00:22:26 --> 00:22:38 So I switch off the lines layer and you see here that this is not the effect from the lines but from colours and saturation. 122 00:22:39 --> 00:22:46 Now I can make some adjustments because i still have the layers here. 123 00:22:47 --> 00:23:11 I want to lighten the face, so I select my ink light layer, select a brush with white foreground colour. 124 00:23:12 --> 00:23:17 I zoom into the image. 125 00:23:18 --> 00:23:33 Reduce the size of the brush and scale it a bit and now I start to paint the eye here. 126 00:23:34 --> 00:23:49 That's too much. 127 00:23:50 --> 00:23:53 This looks better. 128 00:23:54 --> 00:23:59 Now i paint in this part. 129 00:24:00 --> 00:24:02 This is too much. 130 00:24:03 --> 00:24:46 You can imagine there can be lot of modifications in here you can make in the image, by changing these areas here. 131 00:24:47 --> 00:24:50 This is Ok. 132 00:24:51 --> 00:25:00 You can do a lot of changes here and i dont know if i am on the right track. 133 00:25:01 --> 00:25:05 But I like it upto now. 134 00:25:06 --> 00:25:09 Let’s see what else we can do. 135 00:25:10 --> 00:25:17 1st thing is we can use a different layer than the lines. 136 00:25:18 --> 00:25:30 So I switch off the lines and I get very strange colours because now I have again a white background 137 00:25:31 --> 00:25:51 So add another layer here and set it to white and use multiply mode and fill it with 240 grey. 138 00:25:52 --> 00:25:58 Now I have got nearly the same image as with my lines here. 139 00:25:59 --> 00:26:02 Let me switch them on. 140 00:26:03 --> 00:26:20 I have the lines information coming out but this comic effect is still there and i can look what’s better. 141 00:26:21 --> 00:26:29 Lets try some different tricks. 142 00:26:30 --> 00:26:38 I double the colour and the saturation layer and do something with them. 143 00:26:39 --> 00:26:44 Here I just try to get the details out of the image. 144 00:26:45 --> 00:26:52 So go to Filters, Blur and Gaussian blur. 145 00:26:53 --> 00:27:07 And here I choose a value which gives me nice effect. 146 00:27:08 --> 00:27:17 You see that the colours have got little bit smoother. 147 00:27:18 --> 00:27:23 So let's do this on the saturation copy also. 148 00:27:24 --> 00:27:28 Go to Filters, Repeat Guassian Blur. 149 00:27:29 --> 00:27:35 And now I have really flat image with flat colours. 150 00:27:36 --> 00:27:43 So i switch on the original colour and I get a strange effect here. 151 00:27:44 --> 00:28:03 Let's rename these layers as saturation blurred and the colour blurred. 152 00:28:04 --> 00:28:15 If i combine the blurred saturation with the unblurred colour , i get some colours here which looks quite a bit strange. 153 00:28:16 --> 00:28:21 I would like it, if it was not especially on the nose here. 154 00:28:22 --> 00:28:28 So switching this back on and I have this effect here. 155 00:28:29 --> 00:28:36 You can imagine if you reduce the blurring you get sharpe details. 156 00:28:37 --> 00:28:39 This is a real play ground. 157 00:28:40 --> 00:28:49 You have a lot of possibilities here like how to do this, what to do, what to tinker with. 158 00:28:50 --> 00:29:08 Its really fun to do this. 159 00:29:09 --> 00:29:23 The author of the original tutorial has done a tremendous job. 160 00:29:24 --> 00:29:30 I am not so happy with both versions of this image. 161 00:29:31 --> 00:29:39 I like the structure here and the flower, the statue and the pot here 162 00:29:40 --> 00:29:48 I don’t like all the details near the hand and in the face, this could be little bit more flat. 163 00:29:49 --> 00:30:03 In the blurred on I like the details in the face and near the hand but I don’t like the flower which is completely blurred away. 164 00:30:04 --> 00:30:19 So now i can combine the two images and I will start with colour blurred because I like the over all appearance of this more than of the saturation blurred. 165 00:30:20 --> 00:30:36 But I switch on all the layers and add layer mask to saturation blurred and colour blurred and I add a black layer mask fully transparent. 166 00:30:37 --> 00:30:50 And now i'll start working on saturation layer mask so i select white as my foreground colour and select the paint brush here. 167 00:30:51 --> 00:30:54 Now i start painting. 168 00:30:55 --> 00:31:03 I just paint over the parts where I want to have little bit more flatness in the image. 169 00:31:04 --> 00:31:45 This will look a bit strange because now I have the colour layer switched on. 170 00:31:46 --> 00:32:19 So now i select everything by pressing Shift+ctrl+A and copy it by Ctrl + C, go into the image and press Ctrl + V and click on this Floating Selection and with Ctrl + H or with the anchor layer I have my copy here. 171 00:32:20 --> 00:32:31 So you can copy these layer mask too and I think I will leave this image here. 172 00:32:32 --> 00:32:53 I think it’s so quite nice example and in the end i play a bit with this sliders. 173 00:32:54 --> 00:32:56 Lets recap this. 174 00:32:57 --> 00:33:04 You first copy the image layer and make an inked image with threshold tool. 175 00:33:05 --> 00:33:09 Look for areas which you want to have black or very dark. 176 00:33:10 --> 00:33:28 Then you copy the base image again and make a line layer with the edge detect filter and then you set the layer mode to multiply. 177 00:33:29 --> 00:33:41 In this layer you reduce the white to a gray about 240 with the levels tool. 178 00:33:42 --> 00:33:48 Then you copy again the base image and make a colour layer. 179 00:33:49 --> 00:33:55 Set the colour mode to colour. 180 00:33:56 --> 00:34:19 And finally you copy the base layer last time and make a saturation layer and here you set the layer mode to saturation and now you play with the opacity of the different layers or at some layers. 181 00:34:20 --> 00:34:31 Just play around. The results are well mixed but some are stunning. 182 00:34:32 --> 00:34:48 For more information goto http://meetthegimp.org and to send a comment, please write to info@meetthegimp.org. Good bye. 183 00:34:49 --> 00:34:54 This is Hemant Waidande dubbing for the Spoken Tutorial Project.
